Linn County Release Paths
A release ends one custody episode. It does not always end the case or all government control. Linn County arrests, warrants, bond records, and related sheriff records remain with the Linn County Sheriff's Office. The person is physically held at Macon County Jail because Linn County no longer operates a jail. The Ninth Judicial Circuit record supplies the court order or case event behind the departure. Those three sources answer different parts of the same question.
Community release may follow bond, a recognizance order, dismissal, acquittal, time served, probation, or completion of a county sentence. A transfer to the Missouri Department of Corrections, another county, federal custody, or immigration custody is not community release. Parole and conditional release mean a person has left prison but remains under state control. Final discharge ends the supervision tracked by the agency. The exact label should come from the jail transaction, court docket, or corrections record, not an assumption based on a blank search.
- Time served
- The court credits the required jail time and the facility processes the release.
- Detainer
- Another authority asks the jail to hold or transfer the person after the local matter changes.
- Parole
- The Missouri Parole Board allows supervised release from prison before sentence expiration.
- Discharge
- The custody or supervision obligation recorded by that agency has ended.
Linn County Inmate Release Types
The next search depends on how the person left Macon County Jail. A bond release can occur while the Linn County case remains open. Probation comes from a court order and is usually served in the community. A prison commitment moves the person into MODOC custody. The release entry should name the event or authority, while the docket supplies the legal context.
| Departure type | What it means | Where to verify next |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or conditions | Out of jail with a pending case and court terms | Macon jail entry and Linn Case.net docket |
| Dismissal or acquittal | The listed case ended, subject to any other hold | Court disposition and jail release time |
| Time served | The custodial term for that judgment was completed | Judgment, jail credit, and release entry |
| Probation | Community supervision ordered by the court | Case.net and MODOC District 2S |
| Transfer | Custody continued under another agency | Receiving county, MODOC, BOP, or ICE |
| Final discharge | The tracked prison or supervision obligation ended | Historical MODOC file or discharge record |
Leaving Macon County Jail for another authority is a transfer. It must not be reported as release to the community.
Note: The release label and receiving agency distinguish a community departure from continued custody after a Linn County case event.
Bonding Linn County Inmates
Linn County handles bond on its own warrants even though the detainee is housed in Macon. The sheriff's bond instructions direct payment to the Linn County Sheriff's Office in Linneus. Cash and credit or debit cards are accepted, and the card processor adds a fee. Court-date questions go to the Linn County Circuit Clerk. This split matters: Macon processes the physical departure, while Linn documents the warrant and bond transaction.
A receipt proves the payment mechanism, not the end of the charge. Confirm that Macon County Jail processed the person out, then read the Linn docket for bond conditions and the next court event. Another warrant, detainer, or case can prevent release after bond posts. When timing matters, give both offices the full name, birth date, Linn case number, and approximate booking date. Ask whether the person was released to the community or moved to another custodian.
Does bond mean the case is finished? No. It means the person may leave that custody episode under court-set terms. The criminal case continues unless the docket shows a final disposition.
Linn County Release Record Fields
A release record is narrower than an arrest report. The arrest report addresses the event that led to custody. A booking record documents intake. The release or discharge entry records the end of that stay and may identify the authority or destination. Ask for the exact custody episode so the response does not blur separate arrests or cases.
- Booked name and identifier
- Links the entry to the correct person and booking.
- Book-in date and facility
- Defines the start and physical custodian.
- Linn case or warrant number
- Connects jail custody to the court matter.
- Release date and time
- Shows when the person left that facility.
- Release type or authority
- Distinguishes bond, order, completion, or another cause.
- Destination or receiving agency
- Separates community release from transfer.
- Hold or detainer
- Shows why another authority may continue custody.
- Booking photograph
- Links the image to that booking, if releasable.
Not every field is automatically open. Linn County notes that case status, active investigations, safety concerns, juvenile rules, and closed or expunged records can limit disclosure. Ask the custodian to provide segregable open fields and cite the legal basis for anything withheld.
Request Linn County Release Records
The Linn County written request process covers records held by its sheriff. Macon County operates the jail, so a second request may be needed for the jail-management entry or booking image created there. A focused request is easier to route and less likely to return only an arrest report.
- Identify the person by full name, birth date if known, Linn case number, approximate arrest date, and any Macon booking number.
- Ask for the booking and release log entries, date and time, release type or authority, and receiving agency for a transfer.
- Send Linn-created record requests to CustodianOfRecords@LinnCoSoMo.gov or the official web form. Do not fax them.
- Send a parallel request to Macon County Sheriff's Office when the requested item came from its jail system.
- Request a cost estimate before work begins and ask for the legal basis if any portion is closed.

Linn County says it will respond within three business days. That deadline applies to the response, not always the final production. If more time is needed, the custodian may explain the delay. The dedicated request page lists ten cents per page and sixteen dollars per research hour, but the general fee page lists fourteen dollars per hour. Ask for a current written estimate because both rates appear on official pages.
The official request screen illustrates the local rules and fields. Review the Linn County record-request source before sending a request.
The form is the route for Linn-held material, while Macon remains the physical jail custodian.
Note: Send separate requests when Linn holds the arrest record but Macon created the jail release entry or booking photograph.
Linn Release Record Fee Conflict
Two official Linn County pages give different hourly research rates. The dedicated records-request page lists sixteen dollars per hour, while the general sheriff fee page lists fourteen dollars per hour. Both list ten cents per page. Neither figure should be selected merely because it is lower or appears on a more general page.
Ask the Custodian of Records for the current rate and a written estimate before authorizing research. A narrow date range and a specific list of release fields can reduce staff time. Missouri section 610.026 permits certain copying, research, and actual-cost charges and allows advance payment in qualifying circumstances. Electronic delivery may also avoid media or mailing costs.
Linn Release Records and Expungement
Missouri's Sunshine Law sets the access framework. Section 610.023 covers the records custodian and response process, while section 610.026 governs allowable charges. Sections 610.100 and 610.120 address open and closed law-enforcement records. A release transaction may be open in part even when an investigative file is closed.
Expungement under section 610.140 can close eligible records after a court grants a petition. The current law generally uses a three-year post-disposition wait for an eligible felony and one year for an eligible misdemeanor, municipal violation, or infraction. An eligible arrest-only petition has a separate eighteen-month rule and other conditions. These periods do not make every matter eligible.
The petitioner must name the entities believed to hold the record. That is especially important here because Linn may hold the arrest or warrant record while Macon holds the jail transaction and booking image. An order does not affect an unnamed holder. No official local expungement clinic was verified, so filing questions should go to the Linn County Circuit Clerk and legal advice to a qualified Missouri attorney.
Note: Online absence can follow closure, final discharge, or lack of a published roster, so it does not establish the reason by itself.
Costs After Linn County Release
Linn County has an unusual post-release step. The sheriff tells people held on Linn charges to contact the office after release about a “board bill,” meaning claimed incarceration costs. The official board-bill page cites sections 221.070 and 221.120 and offers payment arrangements. Payment can be made through the listed in-person, mail, or online channels.
This debt belongs to the Linn process even though Macon housed the person. It is separate from the court's release authority and does not tell whether the person is still confined. The sheriff warns that unpaid amounts can move to court judgment or collection, so the current balance and terms should come from the office rather than an estimate based on days held.
The Linn board-bill instructions show the post-release route used by the sheriff.
The page confirms that release can create a later Linn County administrative task even when jail custody occurred in Macon.
Find Linn County Released Inmates
Start with the last known custody system. A Linn case usually requires both a Macon jail check and a Linn court check. A state-prison case requires MODOC. Federal and immigration systems apply only when the record points to those authorities.
- Search Missouri Case.net under Linn County using the name or case number, then read bond, warrant, dismissal, judgment, sentence, probation, and commitment entries in order.
- Call Macon County Jail at 660-385-2062. Ask whether the person is still held, was released, or was transferred.
- Request the release time, type, and destination or receiving agency when those fields are open.
- Use MODOC's active search if Macon reports a prison transfer or the person may be on parole or probation.
- Use the MODOC historical Sunshine file and court record after final discharge removes the person from the active search.
- Check MOVANS/VINELink for alerts, or BOP and ICE only when the custody path calls for them.
- Obtain written release records when the legal reason, exact time, or destination must be confirmed.
Linn County has no live inmate roster. A failed or blank search is not proof of release, and a transfer is continued custody.
Why is a released person missing from a locator? The MODOC public tool excludes discharged offenders, and Linn publishes no roster at all. Use historical DOC data, court records, and custodian records to explain the gap.
Note: Record each system's update time because court, jail, notification, and corrections data may change on different schedules.
MODOC Linn County Release Search
The MODOC Offender Web Search covers active offenders, including incarcerated people, probationers, and parolees. It expressly excludes discharged offenders. An institution assignment indicates confinement. A field assignment can support release from prison onto community supervision, but it is not final discharge.
| Search or record field | How to use it |
|---|---|
| DOC ID | Preferred permanent identifier for the correct person |
| Name and aliases | Fallback search when the ID is unknown |
| Assigned place | Separates institution from field supervision |
| Cause number and county | Links the state record to the Linn judgment |
| Completed flag | Shows a sentence row marked complete in the historical file |
| Minimum and maximum dates | Documents calculated active-sentence date fields, not a promise |
Search by DOC ID when possible, compare the birth date and Linn cause number, and review all sentence rows. One completed row does not prove all consecutive or separate terms ended. If the active search returns nothing after a plausible final discharge, the nightly Sunshine Law file covers people who are or have been under MODOC supervision and includes data reaching back to 1974, subject to agency warnings.
The official MODOC welcome screen states the active-search boundary.
That boundary is why a court record or historical DOC request is essential after final discharge.
Linn Court, Macon Jail Records
The jail's Macon address does not move a Linn criminal case into Macon County. Linn belongs to Missouri's Ninth Judicial Circuit. Search the Linn docket for the warrant, bond, release conditions, dismissal, judgment, sentence, jail credit, probation, or prison commitment. Search Macon court records only if the person also has a Macon case.
Case.net explains why release could occur. Macon County Jail records when the person physically left. Linn County sheriff records cover Linn warrants, arrests, bond transactions, and related law-enforcement material. Reconcile all three when an exact result matters. A court order can precede jail processing, and a jail departure can be delayed by another hold.
The split also guards against a common same-name error. Match at least two identifiers, such as full name plus birth date, case number, booking number, or DOC ID. Record the source and date of each fact. A stale screenshot or search absence is weaker than an affirmative agency record.
Linn Release Alerts and Transfers
Missouri calls its VINE service MOVANS. Through the state MOVANS gateway, a user can reach VINELink, the VINE app, or 866-5-MOVANS. Search for the person under Missouri, match the facility and identifier, then register for an available event. An alert can describe release, transfer, escape, death, or another custody change. Read the event label and confirm it with the supplying agency.
Federal cases use a different chain. The BOP Inmate Locator may show a historical release date and released status, generally for federal inmates released after 1982. ICE's locator focuses on present immigration detention, and a missing result does not prove release. The U.S. Marshals Service has no comparable public historical locator. Use the federal court record and a focused agency records request when the locator is not enough.
No official source reviewed identifies Linn County or Macon County Jail as an ICE contract facility. ICE is therefore a conditional fallback, not the routine Linn release route. If Macon reports an ICE or federal transfer, the person left the county jail but did not necessarily enter the community.
Compare Linn County Custody Records
Each system answers a limited question. Choose the row that matches the last custodian, then use a second source to confirm identity and legal authority.
| System | Best use | What absence means |
|---|---|---|
| Macon County Jail | Current physical hold, release, or transfer | Requires a direct check because no public roster exists |
| Linn sheriff records | Arrest, warrant, bond, and Linn-created release material | The desired jail entry may belong to Macon |
| Case.net | Release authority, disposition, sentence, and probation | Sealing, timing, or search mismatch may apply |
| MODOC active search | Prison custody and active parole or probation | Final discharge is excluded |
| MODOC historical file | Former supervision, sentence rows, and completed fields | Confirm with DOC or court records |
| VINELink/MOVANS | Specific-person status and event alerts | Agency participation or data timing may vary |
| BOP or ICE | Federal prison history or current immigration custody | Does not resolve a Linn jail or state case |
Note: A registry result is not a general released-inmate list and does not prove a release date or reason.
Linn County Release Facility
The active facility serving Linn County is Macon County Jail, operated by the Macon County Sheriff's Office at 101 E. Washington Street in Macon. It is the first contact for the physical status of a person held on a Linn matter. The jail can distinguish continued custody, community release, and transfer, subject to its disclosure rules.
No state prison is located in Linn County, and a sentenced person can be assigned to any MODOC institution. No verified federal or ICE detention facility operates locally.
The official no-jail notice documents the contract arrangement.
The notice explains why the correct release search begins outside Linn County while the case and many records remain in Linn.
Historic Linn Jail Is Closed
Linn County's historic jail and sheriff's residence may appear in broad web results, but it is not an operating detention site. The current sheriff notice controls present custody questions. Calling or visiting a historic listing will not confirm a current release, transfer, or booking record.
Macon County Jail is the only verified operating jail in the facility map for Linn detainees. The old site should be described only as history. Current jail transactions go to Macon, while Linn-created warrants, bonds, arrests, and board bills remain with the Linn County Sheriff's Office.
Note: A historic facility listing is not evidence that Linn County currently books, holds, or releases people at that location.
